From the Pastor by Charles Landreth
Greetings to everyone! Each day brings us closer to breaking ground for the Sanctuary. Since the Session accepted the revised plans with a total cost of $825,000, several necessary steps have been taken to make the sanctuary a reality.
An application to have our loan approved was prepared and presented to the Budget and Finance Committee of the Presbytery of Greater Atlanta. Meeting on May 14, the committee approved the loan and guaranteed the repayment of the principal and interest to a commercial bank for the purpose of constructing the facility. We can be thankful that we are a part of a connectional church that will provide such a guarantee to member churches in good standing. This guarantee will be very helpful in securing a loan at a favorable interest rate.
Thanks to Albert and Bailey Wallace who have been carefully reviewing the contract to be signed with Group VI, the builder, provided the congregation votes to build the sanctuary. A proper contract protects the interests of the congregation.
The Book of Order provides for Incorporation and Trustees (G-7.0400). The First Presbyterian Church of Jonesboro is duly incorporated and in good standing with the State of Georgia. Unless another method is selected, the active members of the Session serve as trustees of the corporation. The Session will select one trustee to execute the contract and sign the mortgage note at the appropriate time.
Thanks to John Westervelt who has been working to secure a favorable loan to finance the construction. According to John we are getting close to receiving a Letter of Commitment from a bank that will specify the loan amount and the interest rate.
Once we have received a Letter of Commitment, the Session will call a congregational meeting. The Book of Order (G-7.0304) specifies that the congregation and not the Session makes the decision in "matters related to buying, mortgaging, or selling real property".
Please keep this important opportunity to build a sanctuary for the Glory of God in your prayers
