A near- record turnout of members and guests were present Sunday, September 14 for the Groundbreaking ceremony for the new Sanctuary for the First Presbyterian Church of Jonesboro. With roots dating back almost 125 years to its founding in 1879, it is one of the oldest congregations in Clayton County. The Reverend Billy Wade, Pastor of the First Presbyterian Church in Covington, GA and current Moderator of the Presbytery of Greater Atlanta, was the guest preacher for the occasion.
The event was like a homecoming. Unlike the traditional groundbreaking, everyone was invited to bring a shovel and participate. Former members from outside the area, including two former members visiting here from New Zealand, came and participated. Following the groundbreaking, a buffet luncheon was enjoyed by all.
Group VI, a Peachtree City construction firm that specializes in Church construction will build the new Sanctuary. Construction will get underway in mid-October with completion and occupancy scheduled for early Spring 2004.- Stan May
